Please note, I know I should be using the Angular specific version of MDBootstrap, but I built the entire project using the free version of mdbootstrap standard. So I thought I would just continue with it by buying the premium version at has been working great even though my project is angular js.

@adamgusky You can import styles and scripts in styles
and scripts
array in angular.json
file (you need to update the arrays in object named the same as your project). Please note that we recommend using MDB Angular in such cases and we don't test Standard library in Angular projects.

I have done that but it isn't working. It does however work whent the datatable is directly in the index.html, but doesn't work (eg: the leaderboards aren't sortable) when I place the datatable in a component.

@adamgusky As I mentioned in my previous comment, the use of this product in the Angular project is not recommended and supported. We don't test the Standard library in the Angular environment and we won't be able to help with any potential problems with the components.
