Erroneous source maps with ng serve and chrome dev tools

Installed from: npm via gitlab Angular: v7 @angular/cli 7.0.4 @ngtools/webpack 7.0.4 typescript 3.1.6 webpack 4.19.1 I am trying to get source maps functioning correctly for MDB in order to place breakpoints around a drop down menu and get a better understanding of the behavior.  Although I can see the source maps in webpack:///../../build/ng-uikit-pro-standard under free and pro I am unable to place breakpoints on certain lines and they seem unreliable.  Stack inspector is also unreliable. Any tips for this? As an aside, I am following the mega-menu example and attempting to prevent dismissal upon clicks inside the menu which are not links, which is what led me down this road.
